Arlene Radasky has graciously allowed us to perform a section from her masterful Celtic work of fiction, The Fox. This first meeting between te Druid Lovern and Jahna takes place near the beginning of the book and can be heard in our Beltane 2009 Holiday Special, SP11.

Biography

I love history and every where I have been lucky enough to travel to, I have touched the ground and said hello to those who walked it before me - all the way back through time.

Now, it is my turn to tell some of their stories.

This specific story started about ten years ago, in my head, after reading The Life and Death of a Druid Prince by Anne Ross and Don Robins. I have been lucky enough to have seen the Danish bog body seen here http://www.archaeology.org/online/features/bog/

While I stood over his body, he asked me to understand him as a man, a person with the same types of likes and dislikes as people today. I think we have forgotten that. I read Anne and Don’s book and was even more compelled to tell about the Druid’s life.

I began reading everything I could about that era. I have quite a library now. And I started with about 60,000 words of back-story in the fall of 2005. I thought I was on the track of my characters, but I found out I was writing the story of Jahna’s grandmother. I couldn’t fit Lovern into it; it wasn’t time. What I had done was get to know the people. When Jahna showed up, I could see her. She and I were friends from the beginning.

I know, this sounds like fiction in itself, but I still hear her voice in my head.

The double story-line came because I wanted to connect the ancient lives with our lives. I love to read about archaeology, so Aine MaRea came to me. She was much harder to write about, I struggled with her sometimes, but in the end, I was very glad she was there.
